Q: How much money can a used car appraisal save me on taxes?

A: It depends on the vehicle's condition. For example, if the Red Book wholesale value of a truck is $10,000, but it needs a new transmission and has body rust, we may appraise its true value at $4,000. Because Ontario charges 13% RST on private vehicle transfers, your tax would drop from $1,300 down to $520—saving you $780 at the ServiceOntario counter.

 

Q: Can I get an appraisal after I have already transferred the vehicle?

A: Yes, but you must act quickly. If you already paid the higher book value tax at ServiceOntario, you have up to 60 days from the transfer date to get an official appraisal. Once completed, you can submit the appraisal along with a Retail Sales Tax Refund Application to the Ministry of Finance to get your overpaid tax money refunded.
